If Your Business Walked Into the Room...
The other day I caught myself describing a business to someone, and it struck me that I wasn't talking about the business at all.
"They're dependable."
"They're thoughtful."
"They're easy to work with."
A little later, I found myself describing another one.
"They're always running behind."
"I never know who's going to answer the phone."
"They seem to be in a constant state of chaos."
Those are all descriptions of people... except I wasn't describing people. I was describing businesses.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized every business develops a personality. Not the one crafted in a branding meeting or printed on a wall beside a list of core values. I'm talking about the personality people actually experience. The one customers feel. The one employees live every day. The one vendors quietly hope they'll encounter when they pick up the phone.
If your business walked into the room today, who would everyone meet?
Would it be the person who remembers your name, keeps their word, shows up prepared, and leaves people feeling better than when they arrived? The calm, steady presence others naturally trust because they consistently do what they say they'll do?
Or would it be the person who's always ten minutes late, changes the plan halfway through the conversation, apologizes for missed deadlines, and promises to "circle back" without ever quite getting there?
Maybe your business would be generous. Maybe it would be confident without being arrogant. Maybe it would be the person everyone enjoys working with because they're organized, respectful, and dependable.
Or maybe, without realizing it, your business has become anxious. Always reacting instead of leading. Always rushing to the next fire. Always asking for one more extension.
The truth is, businesses earn personalities the same way people do. Through repeated behavior.
One missed phone call doesn't make you unreliable. One forgotten deadline doesn't define your company. But when those moments become habits, they begin to tell a story. Before long, people stop describing isolated experiences and start describing your business as if it were a person.
That's how reputations are built.
I think this is where many leaders unintentionally miss the mark. We spend a great deal of time talking about culture, values, and branding while overlooking the ordinary moments that actually shape them. Culture isn't created during a retreat or written into an employee handbook. It's built on a Tuesday afternoon when a customer needs an answer, an employee makes a mistake, or someone has to decide whether doing the right thing is worth the extra effort.
Those moments become habits. Habits become expectations. Expectations become your reputation.
I've watched businesses invest heavily in new logos, redesigned websites, polished marketing campaigns, and carefully crafted mission statements, all while the experience stayed exactly the same. The phone still rang too long. Emails still went unanswered. Decisions still bottlenecked with the owner. Customers still had to ask for updates.
They tried to change their image when what really needed to change was their character.
Marketing doesn't create your business's personality. It simply introduces more people to it.
Perhaps the most challenging realization for any leader is this: the personality of your business isn't shaped only by what you model. It's shaped by what you tolerate.
If missed commitments become acceptable, your business begins to feel unreliable. If poor communication becomes normal, your business starts to feel disconnected. If ownership, kindness, preparation, and follow-through are consistently reinforced, your business develops a personality people trust.
None of that happens overnight. It happens one interaction at a time.
So before you ask how people see your business, ask a different question.
If your business walked through the front door today, would people be excited to see it?
Because whether we realize it or not, every business has a personality.
The question isn't whether yours does.
The question is whether you've been building it intentionally.
