    As a mentor, I look for several essential qualities in those I work with: curiosity, talent, anticipating what needs to be done next, and the ability to think outside the box. One mentorship experience that stands out for me is that of a young man named Alton. We taught him many aspects of video production -- he was a sound mixer and held the boom pole over the heads of celebrities Barbara Niven, Cindy Margolis and Kenny Johnson during a behind-the-scenes shoot for Pensacola: Wings of Gold in Ocean Beach, which was standing in for Florida in the show.

    But beyond teaching him how to work on set, we encouraged Alton to think beyond the immediate task and focus on his dreams. His dream was to work on Star Trek, and within a few months, he achieved that goal -- something that made us all so proud! And the most powerful part of that experience was seeing how it transformed his mindset. After working on Star Trek, Alton realized he could pursue any dream he set his mind to. Ultimately, he chose to pivot in an entirely different direction and pursue a career in Psychology.

    That experience reminds me why mentorship matters so much -- it's about helping people see the possibilities within themselves and giving them the confidence to chase after them. As a mentor, there's nothing more rewarding than seeing someone fly higher than they ever imagined.
