I own The Break Murray, so cash flow is very real: game days, UFC nights, trivia, poker, and live music do not all hit the same way. My rule is payroll, core food/drink inventory, and utilities get protected first; everything else has to prove it helps the next event or the next regular customer visit.
The decision rule I use is: if a spend does not support a scheduled revenue night in the next two weeks, I delay it, shrink it, or ask to renegotiate terms. That includes decor, extra promos, specialty inventory, or entertainment add-ons.
One example: I would rather keep trivia free, keep billiards running, and staff the room properly than overbuy for a themed night that might be soft. Low-friction recurring events keep people coming in without forcing a big upfront spend.
On food costs, I watch for menu items that share ingredients across burgers, wings, tacos, salads, and starters. Variety matters, but if cash is tight, I avoid "one-use" purchases that tie up money and create waste.
